CULTURE NEWS

  • Country singer Priscilla Block will perform at the Great State Fair on Women's Day, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. on Chevy Court near Syracuse + the fair offers over 40 free concerts for visitors to enjoy local talent.  Syracuse.com
  • A new historical marker—designed to honor the local Stone Throwers—will be unveiled at Tipperary Hill Memorial Park on Tuesday, March 17 at 11 a.m. during the annual St. Patrick's Day flag raising event; it celebrates efforts led by former Geddes police chief Michael Walsh.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • National Grid is seeking City Planning Commission approval for an energy center on Van Rensselaer St to capture heat from treated wastewater and serve the county aquarium and upcoming Inner Harbor developments. The utility plans to start construction in April 2027—pending essential permits and customer agreements.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Makenna DeMoney, a college softball player, began recovering with virtual reality therapy at Upstate University Hospital after severe burns from a bar explosion last winter. The new VR headsets, bought with a $15,000 donation, ease pain and help patients regain movement during treatments.  Syracuse.com
  • A resident died last summer at Onondaga Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Minoa after staff failed to act on dangerous lab results and withheld CPR. The facility, owned by Centers Health Care, is on a federal list (of worst nursing homes) and may receive fines for these violations.  Syracuse.com

  • Wednesday morning, Syracuse head men's basketball coach Adrian Autry was fired after three seasons with a 49-48 record and no NCAA bids; in a 15-minute phone interview he cited limited resources against Power-Five teams (Wildhack, who delivered the news, had left for Indianapolis).  Syracuse.com
  • Katie Verderber, a 2016 Syracuse law graduate and Army veteran, is representing Team USA in wheelchair curling at the Milano Cortina Paralympic Games. She is competing after overcoming a spinal injury and a rigorous selection process – her inspiring journey highlights local resilience.  Syracuse.com
