CRIME NEWS

  • On March 27, Syracuse Police responded to a 911 call about gunfire on the 100 block of Wisner Court and later located a male suspect on the 100 block of Amherst Avenue who shot himself and was taken in critical condition to Upstate University Hospital—officers did not fire their weapons.  Urban CNY
  • A 21-year-old man, Tahjay Perry, was arrested on seven felony charges for making terroristic threats during several phone calls to Liverpool Central School District and is held at the Onondaga County Justice Center.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology partnered with the Onondaga County Agriculture Council to open its new permanent exhibit Onondaga Grown presents Grow today—this 2,500-square-foot space lets visitors explore how local farms support our food system. Guests can interact with a hands-on farmers market simulation and donate nonperishable items at a one dollar admission—helping connect families to the roots of our community’s agriculture.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery in Elbridge has stocked Onondaga County streams with more than 70,000 trout ahead of the season opening April 1. Superintendent Eric Stanczyk said crews will stock streams like Fabius Brook and Nine Mile Creek (and others) to give the fish time to acclimate before anglers arrive.  Syracuse.com

  • Syracuse officials ordered emergency demolition of a 129-year-old convent that suffered nearly 24 hours of fire damage last week; the building, once the motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis and designed by Archimedes Russel, was deemed a public safety hazard after drone footage showed its dangerous condition—police are investigating possible arson.  Syracuse.com
  • The former Sears store at 1300 S. Salina St. on Syracuse’s South Side, vacant since 1974, has been chosen to become New York’s first ON-RAMP Workforce Innovation Hub—a semiconductor workforce training center funded with $8.5 million from the state. Governor Kathy Hochul said the center will help job seekers and local manufacturers meet the rising demand for skilled workers as part of a major investment push in the region.  Syracuse.com
  • Local organizations including the CNY Solidarity Coalition and regional Indivisible chapters will hold the 'HANDS OFF' protest rally on April 5 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Forman Park to oppose federal overreach in schools, healthcare, reproductive rights and democratic institutions — over 700 locals have signed up to join the march.  Urban CNY
