ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from across Syracuse battled one of the largest structure fires in decades at St. Anthony’s Convent today—after evacuating the building, a chimney collapsed and Chief Michael Monds said officials worked quickly to stop the fire from reaching nearby structures.  CNY Central

  • A 19-year-old man named Treyvon Nellons was involved in a domestic dispute at 118 Weiser Court in the Pioneer Homes housing complex—he shot himself in front of police on Syracuse’s South Side and died, police said.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State plans to cut greenhouse gases may raise garbage fees for Onondaga County residents if the waste-to-energy facility in Jamesville is treated as a profit-making power generator. OCRRA executive director Kevin Spillane said the facility converts 361,000 tons of waste into electricity for 30,000 homes — and his coalition has asked state officials for fair treatment.  WAER

  • The final St. Baldrick’s fundraiser at Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub happened on Sunday and raised $8 million to help kids with cancer—organizers say the event will change location next year—marking 20 years of community support.  Syracuse.com

  • Kamron Wilson, a three-star edge rusher ranked among the nation’s top 600 prospects, verbally committed to Syracuse football on Sunday. He beat offers from Florida State, Nebraska, Michigan State and North Carolina, which strengthens the Orange’s 2026 class.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse Mets lost 12-0 to the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday as the offense froze—Roman Anthony’s early run set the tone—and the pitchers could not spark scoring. The team will host the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for their Home Opener on Tuesday at 2:05 p.m.—with the first 1,500 fans receiving a Trapper Hat from Gannon Pest Control—and look to bounce back.  Syracuse.com
  • Breanna Stewart re-signed with the New York Liberty on Saturday after helping lead the team to its first championship last season—she is a Syracuse native who had arthroscopic surgery on her right meniscus earlier this month and is expected to be ready for training camp next month. Her return solidifies the Liberty’s roster after a successful title run.  Syracuse.com
  • Yesterday the Syracuse Crunch rallied from a 0-2 deficit to beat the Rochester Americans 3-2 in overtime at Blue Cross Arena, with Conor Sheary scoring the game-winner and Jack Finley adding a goal and an assist. The Crunch now holds a 30-21-8-4 record and will travel to Belleville to face the Senators on Wednesday.  Syracuse.com
