- ➤ The Rescue Mission shelter in Syracuse, built for 190 people, has been serving over 200 each night and even 220 on busy nights. Shelter leaders say the surge is due to low-income housing shortages and reduced federal support while new projects fail to meet current needs. WRVO Public Media

- ➤ The Syracuse University Art Museum has received a major gift of over 25 works from Nancy Delman Portnoy that strengthens its collection in contemporary voices and lens-based media — a donation facilitated by alumna Elizabeth Tenenbaum ’98. Syracuse University
- ➤ Syracuse-based poet Ruthnie Angrand (who performs as Rae Sunshine) is appointed Onondaga County poet laureate through 2027. She will host a National Poetry Month mixer on April 12 at 5 p.m. at Black Citizens Brigade. Syracuse.com

- ➤ Students (grades 6 to 12) explored artificial intelligence and memory chip technology at a Micron STEM event, where Syracuse native and retired astronaut Jeanette Epps inspired them with hands-on learning about promising tech careers. - ➤ Outgoing Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud will begin as University of Michigan’s president on May 11, after interim leader Domenico Grasso ends his term + Mike Haynie takes over as chancellor. He was selected at a Jan. 12 board meeting. Syracuse.com
- ➤ Ebony Farrow runs the free Pathways to Apprenticeship program at 1124 W. Genesee St that trains Syracuse residents for union jobs; her current 12-week cohort of 30 students will earn union-ready credentials in May & build skills for trades like carpentry and electrical work. Syracuse.com
- ➤ Syracuse University College of Law has launched a joint J.D. and M.S. in sport analytics program with Falk College set to start Fall. Students can earn both degrees in three years by completing 102 total credits (integrated coursework in law and analytics). Syracuse University
- ➤ Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens announced on Tuesday morning that Desire K. Ndagijimana will serve temporarily on the City School District Board following Cherlyne (Twiggy) Billue's removal for not following security protocols; he will serve until the next election. CNY Central
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Syracuse reached a one-year contract with BNR Bunkhouse Shelter (allocating $100,000) to support pet care services and upgrade shelter facilities. A committee will meet regularly to review needs and explore options for a larger, permanent shelter. CNY Central
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ SU Football announced Tuesday that 5-star recruit Calvin Russell (an Opa Locka native) suffered a major injury during spring practice and will miss an indefinite period. Coach Fran Brown did not provide further details about the injury. CNY Central
- ➤ Gerry McNamara was introduced as Syracuse University's new head men's basketball coach on Monday at a public event.
