ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 12-year-old girl was hit by a car while crossing U.S. Route 11 in front of Central Square Middle School in Hastings on Monday at 2:44 p.m. and was taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition as the driver cooperated with investigators and is not expected to face charges.  Syracuse.com

CRIME NEWS

  • The state Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation into the death of 30-year-old Matthew A. Brown, who became unresponsive while handcuffed by state police after they responded to a call about erratic behavior at his home on Sand Ridge Road in Barneveld — he died on March 24 while officers attempted a mental health evaluation.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Metallica will perform on April 19 at 6 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome on the Syracuse University campus — marking their first show in the Dome since 1996 and their only concert in New York State. Special guests Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies will open a sold-out show.  Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carmelo Anthony, one of Syracuse University’s renowned basketball figures and a 10-time NBA All-Star, will deliver the Commencement address at the JMA Wireless Dome on May 11 at 9:30 a.m. — his son is set to join the Orange men’s basketball team soon.  Syracuse University
  • Syracuse University announced that former basketball star Carmelo Anthony will be the primary commencement speaker on Sunday, May 11 at 9:30 a.m. He will also speak before his son Kiyan begins his freshman year.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Walsh stopped talking to Mark Congel, owner of the Maria Regina campus, in 2022 after Congel stopped responding, and city officials later ordered the demolition of St. Anthony's Convent after a big fire on March 21. Councilor Marty Nave complained that the city should have acted sooner and said the mayor raised his voice during a meeting—City Hall said the mayor plans to speak with Nave soon.  CNY Central
  • The New York state budget deadline has been extended to Thursday as lawmakers tackle spending concerns and potential federal funding cuts. Governor Hochul proposed a 2026 budget of $250 billion to $265 billion plus plans for middle class tax cuts, affordable housing investments and public safety funding while lawmakers aim to pass the budget by week’s end.  CNY Central
  • The Syracuse Department of Parks and Recreation announced an open house on April 10 from 4 to 7—at the Southwest Community Center—to review an updated tree protection plan that was revised for the first time since 1981. Residents will provide feedback to shape urban forestry policies for the next 20 years.  WAER

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at Syracuse University tested a gentle non-invasive electrical pulse on stroke survivors to ease fatigue and boost attention. The study with 10 patients found that those who received the real treatment felt less tired after tests—though their attention did not clearly improve—and the researchers said additional sessions may be needed.  Syracuse University
