COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 27, the Lender Center led by Director Kendall Phillips hosted the 2025 Lender Symposium at Marriott Syracuse Downtown with about 300 representatives from 80 community groups gathering to discuss economic inclusion. The symposium offered roundtable discussions and networking sessions—focusing on topics like funding, burnout and advocacy as part of initiatives funded by a $2.7M grant from the MetLife Foundation.  Syracuse University

CRIME NEWS

  • Owner Mark Congel lost control of the historic St. Anthony’s Convent on Syracuse North Side, leaving the property vulnerable to vandals, thieves, and arsonists for years—an arson fire destroyed its roof and top floor on March 21 and 22.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Syracuse Poster Project will unveil its 24th annual poster series celebrating CNY businesses on Friday, April 25 at the Art in the Atrium Gallery+the posters will be installed along Salina and Warren Streets downtown+the series features designs and poems by local creators including Katie Mulligan, Ester Guncheon, Sanjana Sharma and Ellen McCauley.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Payroll records show that in 2024 most of Syracuse’s highest-paid city workers were police officers and firefighters. Twenty employees earned over $200,000 last year thanks to police overtime—23 of the top 25 earners were police officers.  Syracuse.com
  • FOCUS Greater Syracuse, Inc. is hosting a free housing forum on April 25 from 12:05 p.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom—panelists Troy Waffner, Katelyn Kriesel, and Michelle Scapanski will answer questions about local housing challenges spurred by Micron’s upcoming chip facility and county land acquisition—registration is open to the public.  Syracuse.com
  • Attorney General Letitia James, with the Syracuse Police Department and New York State Police, will host a gun buyback program in Syracuse on April 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Lucy's Church Gymnasium at 413 Gifford St; the event will offer $750 per assault rifle, $250 per handgun, $75 per shotgun, and $25 for non-working, replica, antique, homemade or 3D printed guns.  CNY Central

  • Syracuse.com has re-released ‘Will to Win’—a documentary film that chronicles the Orange’s 2003 NCAA championship season and includes interviews with coaches and players, originally launched in 2023 to mark the 20th anniversary of the win over Kansas. The film also served as a prelude to the NCAA championship game between Florida and Houston that took place Monday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse men's basketball team landed its second transfer commitment on Sunday when former Georgia Tech player Ibrahim Souare agreed to join the Orange next season—he adds depth to the roster alongside other transfers acquired this offseason.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse high school baseball rankings for Section III Week 1 show Cortland as the No. 1 team in Class A while Class AAA and AA teams remain as set in the preseason—Rankings will be revealed on Mondays until the end of sectionals.  Syracuse.com
