CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A video circulating on social media shows Syracuse Police officers violently arresting two men on South Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, with one officer taking a man to the ground while another punches and cuffs a second man—an incident now under internal investigation. CNY Central
- ➤ The Manlius Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Radu Zumar Turner aged 48 for a deadly shooting on Elmbrook Drive on April 6 that left Kenquan Davis aged 39 fatally injured—police said Turner is Davis’s uncle and remains at large. CNY Central
- ➤ The District Attorney said no charges are expected in the death of 46-year-old janitor Brian Deforge, whose body was found in the cafeteria on January 7—his office and the police will issue a joint statement soon while the school reviews safety protocols after discovering a tampered detector. - ➤ Syracuse University student Rolando Gómez will have his piece Sit and Play played at CNY Jazz Central this Sunday, April 13 at 4 p.m.—his work is part of the Society for New Music’s Prizewinners Concert that also features pieces by Sami Seif and Maxim Dybal-Denysenko. Syracuse University
- ➤ Metallica will premiere its unfinished documentary 'Metallica Saved My Life' at Regal Destiny USA on April 18 at 6:30 p.m.—a phone-free screening meant to avoid spoilers—and then perform at the JMA Wireless Dome on April 19 with Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies opening. Tickets for the screening cost $15 with a two-ticket limit per person, and this will be the band's first Syracuse show since 1996. Syracuse.com

- ➤ Syracuse University announced today that it has chosen Graduate by Hilton as the brand partner for a new full-service hotel on University Avenue. The hotel, expected to open in fall with about 200 rooms, a full-service restaurant, and a rooftop bar (designed by DLR Group and managed by The Hardy Group and LeChase), will provide a venue for campus events and local visitors. - ➤ Mayor Walsh proposed a $348 million budget for 2026 that calls for a 2% property tax increase and a 2% water rate raise to help cover rising costs, while $27.2 million will be withdrawn from the city’s reserves. The plan also will hire additional code enforcement inspectors, boost funds for third-party permit reviews, and restructure IT departments after a $10 million payroll project failure (a move aimed at improving city services). - ➤ Syracuse taxpayers may see higher property tax and water bills if Mayor Walsh's proposed $348.4 million budget is approved—raising rates by 2% and adding about $60 per year for a $100,000 home.
