COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Central New York will host a free tax preparation event tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sidney Federal Credit Union on Brewerton Road in Cicero for residents earning $69,000 or less; 22 IRS-certified Baldwinsville students will volunteer to provide the service.  CNY Central

  • Boom Boom Mex Mex (in Camillus) will open for the season this weekend. The restaurant, known for its authentic Mexican dishes, will offer fresh flavors and warm service to local food lovers.  CNY Central

  • NY Times journalist Jodi Kantor will speak at the Friends of Central Library Lecture series on April 14—she will discuss her new book How To Start and reflect on her investigative work that uncovered hidden truths. Attendees can learn from her career experiences and insights.  WAER

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mike Tirico ’88, a renowned NBC Sports broadcaster — who began his career at WAER-FM — will deliver SU’s 2026 Commencement address on May 10 at 9:30 a.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome and serves as vice chair of the Board of Trustees.  Syracuse University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Onondaga County lawmakers approved a temporary cap on the gas and diesel sales tax that will take effect on June 1 and expire Sept. 1, limiting the tax to 16 cents per gallon (insulating drivers from rising costs). The bipartisan measure is expected to ease pump costs this summer.  CNY Central
  • Onondaga County’s Friends of the Aquarium fund received its largest known donation of $5.7M from the county-controlled Soundstage Corporation — a transfer of taxpayer funds meant to complete the aquarium and support educational programs ahead of film projects.  CNY Central
  • Syracuse officials extended the city's contract with Veo until 2026 + they are addressing safety concerns as minors continue riding. The company will start outreach at local high schools in the coming weeks while rolling out new features like cargo baskets and helmet refunds.  Syracuse.com
