ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Syracuse firefighters battled a house fire Saturday, April 12 on the 100 block of Herriman Street in Skunk City that spread to a second home and led ambulance crews to treat a man and check on two cats and a dog — police closed Grand Avenue and Herriman Street.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Syracuse sketch comedy series American High Shorts was nominated for a Webby Award in the People’s Voice category—leading with 45% of the vote—while fans can vote until April 17; winners will be announced on May 12.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 12, 2025, Syracuse police held a gun buyback at St. Lucy's Church where 130 assault rifles — including an Uzi — were turned in during a three-hour event that collected 638 guns overall. The Attorney General raised the payout for assault rifles to $750 from $500, spurring more people to turn in their weapons.  Syracuse.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 12th, the Syracuse Orange women’s lacrosse team played Virginia Tech at Thompson Field in Blacksburg at 12 p.m. ET—airing on ACC Network Extra—after a loss to Yale and a win over California that showed strong plays from key players Emma Ward, Ashlee Volpe, and Caroline Trinkaus.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse football team will hold its spring game at 3 p.m. Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome, where fans will see starting quarterback Rickie Collins Jr. and 17-year-old Demetres Samuel Jr. play on both offense — defense in an 11-on-11 matchup.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse quarterback Rickie Collins is inactive for the spring game—he is held out as a precaution because of his throwing thumb. His injury is not expected to affect fall camp—backup roles will go to redshirt freshman Jakhari Williams and redshirt-senior Michael Johnson.  Syracuse.com
