COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week in CNY many events were planned (including a cancer bike ride held Monday and a Queen tribute show happening tonight in Syracuse with tickets from $44) to bring music, art, and fun to the community. Locals can join a fish stocking event on Wednesday, a free Earth Day festival in Armory Square on Saturday, and a sundae contest in Ithaca on Sunday while enjoying live music and dance events on Thursday and Friday (with offerings to suit many tastes).  Syracuse.com

  • Carmelo Anthony, a Syracuse legend, launched his cannabis brand STAYME70 on Monday at Flynnstoned Cannabis Co.—he met fans during a pop-up sales event held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with set purchase requirements for photos and autographs.  Syracuse.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A year ago on April 14th, during a traffic stop on Tipperary Hill, suspect Christopher Murphy shot and killed Officer Michael Jensen and Lieutenant Michael Hoosock in a Salina neighborhood—Police Chief Joe Cecile and Sheriff Toby Shelley said they have provided mental health support for officers to help them cope with the loss.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, nearly all Syracuse Common Council members met to question the Walsh administration about the unfinished payroll modernization project that has cost $8.1 million since 2020. Chief Administrative Officer Corey Dunham said work on timekeeping is nearly ready—while councilors stressed that future project phases will need council approval and competitive bidding.  CNY Central
  • Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile—who was named chief in 2022 after his predecessor's resignation—plans to retire at the end of 2025 after more than 40 years with the department.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens began her campaign on Monday with a plan to build 1,000 new housing units by the end of her first term — a strategy that includes faster construction of manufactured homes, townhomes, and two-family homes along with repairs to vacant properties and public spaces. State Senator Rachel May endorsed Owens, adding support for her focus on improving affordable housing and neighborhood infrastructure.  Syracuse.com
  • Today the Syracuse City Code Enforcement Department is asking for $1 million to hire outside firms and add two inspectors to speed up permit approvals and improve building safety. Recent code violations in schools and vacant properties have raised concerns, and officials say the changes are needed to protect neighbors—though critics worry about increased costs for taxpayers.  CNY Central
  • The City of Syracuse filed a lawsuit on April 2 to appoint a new receiver for Skyline Apartments and demand $2 million for repairs—two years after Clear took over the building and halted promised renovations. Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens said flooding on eight floors in March and false updates on construction progress have raised concerns, and Clear must reply by April 23—adding urgency to the legal action.  CNY Central
