COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Honor Flight Syracuse is preparing to fly 62 Vietnam veterans to visit memorials in Washington, D.C. on May 3 — the program, which has already flown 1,600 veterans and depends on private donations, is asking the community to donate returnable bottles and cans at Destiny USA on April 26 and April 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted will perform with his band Newsted and Friends on July 18th and 19th at the Everson Museum auditorium in Syracuse—an event that will include an art exhibit by Tyler K. Smith and serve as a fundraiser for the museum.  WAER

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Onondaga Community College reopened its Indigenous student center with new computers and art by alumni like Brandon Lazore — the center welcomes everyone to learn about Native culture. The college hired Admissions Counselor Irv Lyons Jr. in January to recruit Native students, adding 15 new enrollees, and will host a Haudenosaunee Arts Festival on August 9 with 45 vendors, food trucks, a fashion show and more activities.  Syracuse.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Syracuse defensive tackle Maraad Watson opened his transfer recruitment and is linked to four major football schools (Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas) after he earned Freshman All-American honors last season. He started 11 games with 31 tackles at Syracuse and will play three more seasons under current eligibility rules.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse football got its first spring transfer when former Louisville offensive lineman Austin Collins joined the team after two starters left the portal on Friday. The team will host visits with linebacker Andrew Simpson and offensive lineman Orion Irving as it works to fill key positions.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse recruit Kiyan Anthony (Class of 2025) scored 26 points and earned MVP at the Jordan Brand Classic in Washington, D.C. on Friday night as he made 11 of 15 field goal attempts including 3 of 5 from long range and received a Jumpman jacket from his father, Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse Crunch clinched a playoff spot for the seventh straight season — they will face the Rochester Americans in a best-of-five Calder Cup series for the third consecutive postseason. The series begins Friday, April 25 at 7:05 p.m. in Rochester, continues with Sunday, April 27 at 3:05 p.m. in Rochester, and shifts to Syracuse for Game 3 on May 1 at 7 p.m., with Games 4 and 5 on May 3 and May 9 at 7 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. if needed.  Syracuse.com
