ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New York State Police said a fatal crash in Pompey on April 26 took the life of 21 year old Jacob P. Korkue while he drove a 2009 GMC Envoy that collided with a 2018 Jeep Wrangler at about 3:30 p.m.—other drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • A Syracuse man was sentenced on Monday to six and a half years in federal prison for distributing, transporting and possessing child pornography—he is also ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release, pay $60,000 in restitution fees and register as a sex offender.  CNY Central

  • Jason Isbell said on Threads that Syracuse legend Libba Cotten is the most underrated guitar player ever—she pioneered a unique style by playing the guitar upside down and, after years of being overlooked, received honors including a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction posthumously.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, severe thunderstorms are expected to cross parts of Upstate New York with the Syracuse area facing enhanced risk for damaging winds, hail and possible tornadoes — the National Weather Service notes a 30-45% chance of damage, and the high will reach 82 degrees before a cold front drops temperatures by Wednesday morning.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An appeals court upheld a judge’s ruling that prevents Sheriff Toby Shelley from stopping the county from closing Jamesville Correctional Facility — the county plans to move inmates to the downtown jail to save money and address staffing shortages. The sheriff is reviewing the decision and will issue a statement later this week.  Syracuse.com
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul is holding firm at $200 million for a new emergency department at University Hospital in Syracuse while state lawmakers push for $450 million to address growing overcrowding. Local officials note long wait times for patients and plan to secure money in steps over the next two years — a move they say is needed to improve care.  Syracuse.com
  • A confirmation hearing began at 10 a.m. Monday on the Syracuse diocese’s plan to exit bankruptcy and create a $100 million fund to pay abuse survivors; the diocese filed for bankruptcy nearly five years ago in response to sex abuse lawsuits. The hearing — expected to last about a week — faced objections from a government-appointed trustee and insurance companies over whether the funding could be met.  Syracuse.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A California developer plans to turn the old Lafayette Hills country club into a new community with nearly 300 homes—priced from $350K to over $1M—and a resort-style setup including lakes, walking trails, parks, and a 9-hole golf course for Micron workers. Site work will begin later this year while city officials review plans to help fund sewer extensions for the project.  Syracuse.com

  • Syracuse football had four players chosen in the NFL Draft who signed four-year contracts that will yield similar salaries, with Oronde Gadsden II set to earn nearly $4.6 million, quarterback Kyle McCord just under $4.5 million and defensive end Fadil Diggs plus receiver LeQuint Allen expected to earn over $4.3 million if they stay on their teams — the contracts follow the NFL’s collective bargaining rules — and all players will earn average salaries under $2 million per season.  Syracuse.com
