  • Business Council of New York State and 11 economic groups sent a letter to New York House members urging them to oppose any efforts to weaken the CHIPS Act — a program that helped secure Micron Technology’s planned $100 billion chip plants near Syracuse. They warned that altering the $52 billion incentive could risk the thousands of jobs and economic growth promised for Central New York.  Syracuse.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Houston Wheeler, 46, was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison for firing multiple shots during a fight at Tony’s Quick Bite on Otisco Street in Syracuse—he returned with a gun until another man grabbed it and shot him, leaving him permanently disabled.  Syracuse.com
  • At least 11 Westhill boys lacrosse players faced charges for a hazing incident that involved kidnapping a younger teammate on Thursday night in a remote part of Onondaga County — the players had 48 hours to turn themselves in as investigations continued and games were canceled.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse police have not released the shooter’s identity in a road rage killing on April 23 because no charges have been made, and the district attorney said his name will be shared when a grand jury finishes its probe into whether he acted in self-defense—this practice is rare compared to typical homicide cases.  Syracuse.com

  • Carpenters in Central New York will be needed as major projects like Micron and Interstate 81 will require thousands of new workers. The North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Center in Syracuse has expanded its 18000 square foot facility to train apprentices—who are paid as they learn—and holds monthly informational meetings at 6 p.m.  CNY Central

  • Gov. Hochul and legislative leaders proposed $50M for a Housing Access Voucher Program to help low-income New Yorkers pay up to full fair market rent—officials warn this funding may only partly offset potential federal Section 8 cuts.  Central Current

  • The average home sale price in Onondaga County reached $301,300 on April 1, up 27% from 2022 as limited inventory drove multiple offers and homes spent only nine to 10 days on the market—real estate experts noted the rapid pace showed a supply-demand gap—posing challenges for buyers.  Syracuse.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Walleye season opens May 1 and runs until March 15—anglers will target walleye, northern pike, pickerel, and tiger muskie on Oneida Lake under regulated size limits. Local fishing champion Ed Hatten advised starting in the shallow bays, where fish are expected to linger after the spawn, to get an early bite.  Syracuse.com
  • Olivia Bachert won a silver medal at the U23 World Rowing Championships last summer and, despite a late entry, earned the stroke seat for Syracuse’s varsity eight—boosting her confidence for upcoming ACC competitions.
