COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Matt Mulcahay from CNY Central was officially added to the Syracuse Press Club Wall of Distinction downtown—following a board vote that reviewed over 20 nominees. He celebrated the honor at the annual award dinner and said he will mark 40 years in reporting next year.  CNY Central
  • Van Robinson, a long-time Syracuse politician and advocate for the Black community, died at 87 Saturday afternoon at Upstate University Hospital. He served 18 years on the Common Council — including as its first Black president — and led the local NAACP for many years.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Syracuse Common Council will hold a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7 — a step in plans to replace about 10 miles of sidewalks using funds from property fees and state reimbursements. Crews will post notices and restrict driveway access for 2 to 3 weeks as work begins in the 2025-26 fiscal year.  Syracuse.com
  • The New York State Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to an upcoming lane closure along Interstate 81 Southbound in Syracuse. The lane will be reduced to one from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from May 5 to 9 for bridge work — construction is weather-dependent.  CNY Central

HEALTH NEWS

  • Saturday saw the fourth annual Central New York Walk for Brain Cancer Research organized by medical student Nneka Onwumere to support Debbie's Brain Cancer Research Fund. The event, held in heavy rain—its largest turnout to date—raised nearly $140,000, with $65,000 allocated to brain cancer research.  CNY Central

  • Skaneateles’ boys lacrosse team beat Marcellus 20-10 on May 2 at Skaneateles High School—scoring a season-high 20 goals and taking a 12-goal lead late in the game—ensuring an eight-game win streak.  Syracuse.com
  • On Saturday, Cicero-North Syracuse beat South Jefferson 10-7 on Spartans’ field with Gabby Putman scoring a hat trick and adding two assists—giving the state champion team its first win over South Jefferson. The Northstars will face West Genesee at 7 p.m. on Thursday while South Jefferson plays Watertown at 7 p.m. on Monday.  Syracuse.com
  • High school track athletes in Section III have made strong starts this spring and quickly assumed key roles on their teams—coaches note that their early success boosts team performance and promises more competitive meets ahead.  Syracuse.com
  • Thirty Section III track teams competed Saturday at East Syracuse Minoa High School in wet, cold weather—Baldwinsville boys earned the top finish with 110 points while Cicero-North Syracuse girls led with 120 points, showing strong performance despite the challenging conditions.  Syracuse.com
