EDUCATION NEWS

  • During the 2023–2024 school year, 42 Central New York schools had all their students test proficient on the Algebra I Regents exam—one of these was Expeditionary Learning Middle School in Syracuse.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday night flash floods in Jordan forced the evacuation of 5 to 10 homes when rising waters submerged cars and floated furniture—firefighters rescued residents and state officials declared a state of emergency.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NYCLU attorney Lanessa Owens-Chaplin said Van Robinson helped her see the damage caused by I-81—Robinson died this past weekend at age 87—and his early ideas shaped her career; plans to remove the 60-year-old viaduct are set for next year.  WAER
  • City officials in Syracuse are working with federal partners to secure a $30 million grant for rebuilding the 15th Ward after a House committee cut funding from the Neighborhood Access — Equity program. County and city leaders will lobby federal partners — a move to either preserve the funding or find other options if it is clawed back.  CNY Central
  • Today, state lawmakers introduced a budget bill that allocates $30 million to upgrade the State Fair's Chevy Court & Suburban Park and improve Expo Center acoustics as part of a $35 million fund that also covers $5 million for repairs. Lawmakers are debating the bills now, with votes expected by Friday.  Syracuse.com
  • Central New York lawmakers secured $450M—an increase from the $200M first proposed—to expand Upstate Hospital’s emergency room, burn unit and operating rooms. The bipartisan funding is set to improve patient care by reducing ambulance wall time.  CNY Central
  • Officer Michael Jensen and Lt. Michael Hoosock, killed in an April ambush in Salina, had their names added to the New York State Police Officers Memorial at Empire State Plaza in Albany. More than 500 family members, friends and fellow officers attended the unveiling ceremony — Gov. Kathy Hochul had landmarks lit blue to honor fallen officers.  Syracuse.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Salina 1st developers on Syracuse’s South Side have revised their project to build a five‐story building—featuring five retail storefronts and 32 apartments for households earning less than 80% of the area median income—after facing financing challenges with their original mixed-use plan. They will secure a construction loan in early June and start construction later this year with the work expected to take 12 to 18 months.  Syracuse.com
