CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Syracuse Bishop Douglas Lucia led a noontime mass to pray for the newly elected American pope and said he was amazed by this historic change (he reminded the congregation that Good Shepherd Sunday is on May 11).  CNY Central

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 3,000 farmers attended the 100th New York Future Farmers of America convention at the State Fairgrounds on May 9th where students demonstrated agricultural skills and participated in livestock events. The three-day event featured workshops and industry partner exhibitions — recognizing high school leaders and marking the site of the first FFA convention held in 1925.  CNY Central

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, spill response experts answered a report of milky, pale green water entering Onondaga Lake from a ditch near Restoration Way in Geddes. Honeywell said a malfunctioning valve amid heavy rain caused its groundwater treatment system to release Solvay waste—contractors plan permanent repairs and continue monitoring the site for minor water quality effects.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Van Robinson, a longtime Syracuse council leader and champion for racial equality, died today at age 87 after a life spent fighting to remove the I-81 viaduct and boost minority hiring in public safety. His work led to lasting changes in the community—his wife Linda now plans to swing his sledgehammer in his honor.  Syracuse.com
  • New York has passed its FY2026 budget after lengthy talks in Albany—lawmakers are divided as some praise the new support for small businesses, public safety, and infrastructure while others warn it could hurt upstate communities. The $254 billion plan brings changes in education, health, and local funding that will affect communities across the state.  CNY Central
  • An independent firm found 26 red flags in Mayor Ben Walsh's Fiscal Year 2026 Budget and noted that Syracuse could cut costs by $26 million while the Common Council's 7% spending cut would save only $16 million, leading them to reject the budget over a $27 million deficit — intensifying the clash between the mayor's office and the council. The mayor and city leaders held a news conference and argued that the cuts would harm department efficiency as they criticized the council for using outside help with the review.  CNY Central

SPORTS NEWS

  • College lacrosse fans watched round 1 of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament yesterday on ESPN+—with Syracuse versus Brown at 4 p.m.—and round 2 games will begin tomorrow at 12 p.m. on the same service.  Syracuse.com
