- ➤ Oswego County had one of the highest rates of hungry kids in the state in 2023 with 20.3% food insecurity among nearly 5,000 children—data released by Feeding America in May. - ➤ On Saturday night, after leaving prom and grabbing slushies in Manlius, Cazenovia High School juniors Maddie Caraher and Olivia Avery were hit head-on by a 26-year-old driver whose Subaru—reported to have an open container—crossed into their path on Cazenovia Road, leaving Maddie with a concussion and Olivia with broken bones that require surgery. - ➤ Emergency crews responded to a house fire on Smith Road — near Thompson and Totman Roads — in North Syracuse on Memorial Day afternoon around 3 p.m. as smoke billowed from the charred structure and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office blocked the road. CNY Central

- ➤ A man stabbed a vehicle unprovoked near Iron Pier Apartments at 720 Van Rensselaer St—he then attacked officers who responded to a 911 call at about 2:24 p.m. on Friday, and police subdued him during a struggle; 31-year-old Eugene Butler now faces charges of second-degree harassment, third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest with bail set at $5,000 cash and $10,000 bond. - ➤ Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse lost a $25,000 grant for exhibit enhancements after federal arts funding cuts — forcing the museum to scale down its plans, use reserves, and boost fundraising efforts to maintain its staff — as it prepares for a bicentennial celebration. WAER

- ➤ New Hometown Heroes banners now fly in Burnet Park, NBT Bank Stadium, near the CNY Regional Market, Upper Onondaga Park & the National Veteran’s Resource Center to honor Syracuse veterans. Mayor Ben Walsh said the program expanded after families shared veterans' stories & the banners will remain for three years. WAER
- ➤ The NYS Department of Transportation announced that State Route 370 in Salina and Liverpool will be re-paved with improved curb ramps and sidewalks and the bridge carrying State Route 34 over the Erie Canal will be replaced and realigned with a widened shoulder — both projects will use federal funds and be completed by fall 2026.
