  • The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse said it expects no layoffs or parish closures as it emerges from bankruptcy today. Officials detailed a plan that creates a compensation fund of $100 million + $76 million from insurers to pay abuse survivors, with loans repaid over the next 29 years.  Syracuse.com

  • Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz will perform a solo acoustic set drawing from his new gospel album at Landmark Theatre (362 S. Salina St.) on Sunday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. with tickets starting at $54.  Syracuse.com

  • Teachers in 13 Syracuse schools will earn a $10K stipend for overtime work under the Elevate 315 program designed to boost test scores and attendance in struggling schools. Educators must complete personalized learning training while the district contracts XanEdu on a $715,000 consulting project.  Syracuse.com
  • Donald Newhouse, a dedicated benefactor of Syracuse University who supported top communications education, died May 26 at age 96. University leaders said his generosity and commitment to quality journalism shaped the school and left a lasting legacy.  Syracuse University
  • James Tarby Jr, a 26-year Air National Guard veteran, was named this year's recipient of the Dr. Frank E. Funk Military Student Excellence Award at the College of Professional Studies. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill in the NY Legislature would ban donated venison harvested with lead ammunition over contamination concerns, a change that could cut an important protein source for Central New York food banks. The proposal is under committee review and may be reintroduced next session.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • After a series of dangerous care failures in 2025, Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Syracuse froze admissions in January and reduced its residents to 390 — state inspectors require improvements before new admissions can resume.  Syracuse.com
