CRIME NEWS

  • A man was shot on Syracuse’s North Side on Wednesday afternoon when police responded around 2:12 p.m. at 1012 Park St. — across from Stop and Shop, and he was taken by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital.  Syracuse.com
  • Kenneth Brown, 40, is charged with criminal negligent homicide after his 1-year-old daughter Kyra Brown overdosed on a pill containing fentanyl and cocaine that he left in an accessible area at their 410 Burdick Ave home on October 31, 2024—paramedics found her unresponsive, she later died at Upstate University Hospital, and police arrested him on May 22.  CNY Central

  • Dave Matthews Band kicked off its 2025 concert season on Tuesday night at Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse with an old school jam session that featured many classic tunes — the band extended Memorial Day weekend and excited longtime fans.  Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Simran Sanders, the 14-year-old champion from Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School—winner of the Post-Standard spelling bee for the third time—competed at the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 27 in Oxon Hill, Md. She advanced through five rounds before she was eliminated after misspelling arnica, finishing tied for 58th out of 243 spellers.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York State will run its Get Offline — Go Outside program this summer to help 21,000 low-income youths get jobs in parks, camps, child care centers and cultural centers across 57 counties and New York City. In Central New York, Onondaga County will receive $1,396,576 while other areas get funds — the program aims to build job skills and boost local growth.  CNY Central

  • High school boys lacrosse in Section III saw key matchups on Wednesday as Fayetteville-Manlius met Baldwinsville in Class A and New Hartford faced Vernon Verona Sherrill in Class C—teams that had met during the regular season.
