ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Syracuse firefighters responded to a house fire Saturday night at 601 W. Ostrander Avenue on the south side — they quickly controlled the flames, confirmed the unoccupied home under renovation was empty, and left after ventilating the structure and assessing significant fire, smoke and water damage.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 30, Coheed and Cambria headlined a metal show at the Empower FCU Amphitheater in Syracuse, playing tracks from their new album as they blended indie rock with heavy metal sounds. Mastodon and Periphery also performed while powerful solos and heartfelt tributes united the crowd — a night that showcased metal’s ability to bring fans together.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 16 and 17, Rescue Mission Alliance of Syracuse partnered with Assembly Member Pamela Hunter, Syracuse Community Health Center, and VSP Vision Eyes of Hope to offer free eye exams to 120 local residents, with 117 receiving prescription glasses—65 made on site and 52 ordered from a lab.   • The Fayetteville-Manlius flag football team won a state quarterfinal game yesterday by beating Albany 21-19 and became the first Section III team to win a state tournament game — coach Ryan Aldrich praised the team's strong defense and said they will face undefeated Scarsdale in the state semifinals next Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Cortland High School.  Syracuse.com
  • Christian Brothers Academy and Cicero-North Syracuse will play in the Section III Class AAA baseball championship today at 6 p.m. at Onondaga Community College+ CBA enters as the defending champion with a 15-6 record and a win in last year’s final, while C-NS holds a 12-5 record and earned a win in their regular season match.  Syracuse.com
  • Top-seeded Hamilton (15-2) faces No. 2 McGraw (14-4) in the Class D championship game today at 2 p.m. at Carrier Park Field; Hamilton won both regular season matchups against McGraw.  Syracuse.com
  • The championship game on Saturday saw West Genesee beat Baldwinsville by a score of 15 to 10 in a rain-soaked contest & improved their record to 18 to 0. The unbeaten Wildcats will face the Section X champion in the sub-regional round on Wednesday at Fayetteville-Manlius High School & seek a state title for the first time since 2008.  Syracuse.com
