  • Thousands of runners, families, and supporters gathered in downtown Syracuse Saturday morning for the 29th Annual Paige’s Butterfly Run to honor Paige Arnold and raise funds for children battling cancer at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital — her parents founded the race to keep her memory alive.  CNY Central

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congressman John Mannion secured over $7 million in federal funding for PEACE, Inc.—which runs Head Start programs—to support nearly 1,000 low-income children and families in Onondaga County, including those in Syracuse.  CNY Central

SPORTS NEWS

  • On June 7, Section III high school sports teams competed in state playoff games across several venues including Cortland High School and Onondaga Community College—events featured flag football, softball, baseball, and lacrosse matchups that set the stage for the state final four.  Syracuse.com
  • Fayetteville-Manlius flag football ended its inaugural season with a 14-7 loss to undefeated Scarsdale in the New York State semifinal at Cortland High School on Saturday, having won the Section III Class A title earlier—Coach Ryan Aldrich said the team is proud and will build on this milestone next season.  Syracuse.com
  • Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse won a commanding 22-9 state regional game against Niskayuna on Saturday — four different players scored at least three goals, and the team will face Penfield Friday at SUNY Cortland in the state semifinals.  Syracuse.com
  • South Jefferson and Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse teams advanced to the state semifinals after winning their regional finals on Saturday and will play at SUNY Cortland on Friday—South Jefferson faces Cold Spring Harbor and Jamesville-DeWitt will meet Bayport-Blue Point. Watertown ended its season with a 16-13 loss to Columbia.  Syracuse.com
  • Bishop Grimes baseball lost 4 to 3 to Deposit—Hancock in the regional championship at Conlon Baseball Field on June 7 in Binghamton. The Cobras, the last sports team for the school, ended their season before merging with Bishop Ludden next fall.  Syracuse.com
  • The Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team won the state Class C quarterfinal game 16-5 over Honeoye Falls-Lima at Cicero-North Syracuse with Lucas Patchen scoring five goals. They will face Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake at 3 p.m. Wednesday at SUNY-Cortland and hope to reach a state championship closer to home.  Syracuse.com
  • Marcellus boys lacrosse lost the state quarterfinal game with a score of 13 to 8 against Penn Yan, ending a season record of 14 wins and 5 losses and prompting six seniors to retire after three straight sectional titles. Coach Collin Donahue said the team played hard and will work to return to the state championship next season — he remains proud of their effort.  Syracuse.com
  • Seven Section III high school baseball and softball teams fought for regional titles this weekend; on Saturday, baseball contests in Classes AAA, B, C and D were held at Onondaga Community College and Conlon Field while softball games in Classes AAA and AA took place at Grand Island and Luther Forest, and a Class AA baseball game is set for today at 6 p.m. in Troy — most games are streamed live on the NFHS Network — to bring excitement to local fans.  Syracuse.com
