  • After severe storms on Sunday that produced an EF-1 tornado and killed two children and one adult in Kirkland, National Grid said over 15,000 customers in Oneida County remain without power amid heat warnings—restoration is expected by 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  CNY Central
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York started its annual 'Christmas in July' drive to help families with seriously ill children by asking for pantry staples and household supplies. Donations will be accepted on July 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CNY Ronald McDonald House at 1100 E. Genesee St.—lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and community members can also buy items from an Amazon Wish List.  CNY Central

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An apartment building at 766—76 James and Lodi St. in Syracuse was sold as part of a $25,100,000 deal that also included a vacant commercial property at 204—208 Wayne St. The sale is among 30 recorded business and land transactions in Onondaga County from June 8 to 14.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Redhouse Arts Center will unveil a new LED marquee on July 15 at its 400 S. Salina location after installation begins on June 30. The $120,000 sign, funded by state and community contributions, is the first new theater marquee downtown in 100 years.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Onondaga County is planning to open a downtown drop-in center to help homeless people get shelter during the day in Syracuse. The center—using opioid lawsuit money—will serve between 30 and 50 people daily.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse Common Council approved a measure on Monday that transfers $2.5 million from the general fund to the Syracuse Urban Renewal Agency for a new home repair program addressing the housing crisis—councilors had withheld the funds over concerns it would create new administrative positions. The funds will support the city's housing strategy for property owners approved last September.  Syracuse.com
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul directed the New York Power Authority to build one or more nuclear power plants that will supply electricity to roughly 1 million households — marking New York's first nuclear plant in 50 years — and she will announce the plan today at the hydroelectric plant near Niagara Falls.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced Monday that the city extended cooling center hours at two community centers from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.+this step aims to help residents beat forecasted heat. City pools and water spray features opened early+residents are advised to call ahead to confirm schedules.  CNY Central
