ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 4, firefighters responded at 7:20 p.m. to a blaze on Midland Avenue started by a reckless discharge of fireworks that injured two children and one adult—one child was taken to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital for burns while five residents escaped and 15 displaced people are being aided by the Red Cross, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • Syracuse Police arrested 15-year-old Kyari Cunningham on Monday at a home on Martin Luther King Boulevard after a shooting at the Onondaga Park pool on June 24 killed 15-year-old Adhon Thomas + he was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.  CNY Central
  • A Syracuse woman, Ashley Roche, is facing a new homicide charge after an indictment in Onondaga County Court following her arrest over a year ago for fatally stabbing Jahliek Stewart with a large kitchen knife through an open car window on the 1900 block of East Fayette Street on June 23.  Syracuse.com
  • The family of the man fatally shot by a Syracuse officer nine years ago asked for a new trial in their lawsuit because they said the two-week trial was unfair—lawyer Fred Lichtmacher argued that the jury reached an improper compromise by excluding some potential jurors.  Syracuse.com

  • Hamilton tickets will go on sale today at 10 a.m. online at BroadwayInSyracuse.com and Ticketmaster.com, in person at the Landmark Theatre Box Office, or by calling (315)475-7979. Tickets for performances (September 9 to 21) have a purchase limit of nine per account and range from $36.00 to $176.00 with a lottery offering 40 $10 seats.  CNY Central

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Federal data shows eggs dropped by more than 11% in May to $4.55 from a record high of $6.23 last month—although they still cost over 68% more than last May. Ground beef prices rose by over 19% compared with last May and increased by over 2.7% from the previous month.  Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Syracuse City School District and partners have launched a summer meal program that offers free breakfast and lunch at 36 park, school, and community sites to children 18 and under until August 15—helping families stretch limited food dollars during the break.  WAER
  • Construction on STEAM High School is underway and the building will open to 250 ninth grade students in September. City leaders have proposed permanently closing South Warren Street in front of the school for bus routes+ the plan will be reviewed later by the Common Council and the State Department of Transportation.  CNY Central

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since legalization, Central New York emergency rooms treated nearly 13,000 cannabis cases in 2023 for severe vomiting, rapid heartbeat and panic from high-THC dabs — the highest rate in the state. Local health officials stressed that while no adult deaths occurred, some children suffered life-threatening reactions from accidental ingestion — requiring extended hospital care.  Syracuse.com
