CULTURE NEWS

  • At St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church on the West Side, the annual Middle Eastern festival kicks off tomorrow and runs through Sunday, offering homemade food, live music, and traditional dancing. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Section III girls lacrosse players earned USA Lacrosse All-Academic honors, including Christian Brothers Academy's Maeve MacKenzie, as over 60 players from New York were recognized for balancing sports and school. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Syracuse is expanding its municipal broadband service, Surge Link, to reach over 9,200 underserved households in areas like Valley, Skunk City, Washington Square, Northside, Prospect Hill, and Hawley-Green. The expansion is backed by a $15 million investment—$10.8 million of which came from Governor Hochul’s ConnectALL initiative—and will offer 100 Mbps internet service.  WAER
  • Central Current’s reporter Patrick McCarthy joined Maximilian Eyle and Dr. Rick Wright on July 9 to discuss recent election results in Syracuse. They compared Zorhan Mamdani’s win in the New York City mayoral primary with local progressive victories and examined issues with open meeting laws and police data sharing.  WCNY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Syracuse will host Monmouth on November 18 at the JMA Wireless Dome during the 2025-26 basketball season—one of nine non-conference games announced so far that feature matchups in Las Vegas and Philadelphia. The Orange plan to use these contests to further their season schedule.  Syracuse.com
  • Joe Girard, a 24-year-old former Syracuse star who averaged 21 points per game in Lithuania, is turning down NBA Summer League offers — he is waiting for better opportunities from European teams including Italy, Spain, Greece and the Adriatic league. He will resume training this week with local coaches to get ready for play in leagues like the EuroCup and FIBA Champions League, as he aims to boost his role in pro basketball.  Syracuse.com
  • Over the past five seasons, three Section III football receivers passed 1,000 yards, and West Canada Valley’s Cam Ludwig recorded over 1,200 yards in 2023 — a standout performance among top athletes.  Syracuse.com
