ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today, a woman in her 20s died at the scene and a 24-year-old man was critically injured after a dump truck struck them near Syracuse University on East Adams and University Avenue—police said the truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.  Syracuse.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An IKEA store will open this fall in the old At Home space at Destiny USA — its third location in New York that will offer furniture and home accessories. Joe Bright, owner of Dunk & Bright, said his store plans to use billboards on South Salina Street and Exit 17 to show customers that local business offers similar prices and better service.  CNY Central

  • Carlene Lacey, a former National Grid workforce director, was named chief executive officer of ON-RAMP Syracuse— a training center that will help prepare Central New York workers for growth from Micron Technology— and will lead efforts to boost the local tech workforce.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Syracuse Department of Water released first half 2025 water sampling results that show the drinking water meets U.S. EPA standards for the second straight reporting period after tests in 2024 did not meet the standard—122 samples from homes with lead service lines recorded 9 parts per billion, which is below both current and upcoming guidelines.  CNY Central
  • The city of Syracuse is battling lead contamination in its water supply after new tests showed that about nine percent of children in the city have lead in their systems. City officials said residents must follow correct lead testing procedures to help get accurate results and plan to replace thousands of lead service lines by the end of 2026—projects are already underway in Eastwood.  CNY Central
  • Jamesville Beach is temporarily closed for swimming because the Onondaga County Health Department reported an algal bloom in the water+ other park amenities remain open while water testing is underway. Visitors can swim at Oneida Shores Beach in Brewerton, which is open Monday to Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 11 to 6 p.m.  CNY Central
