CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Central New York hosts many events including Creed’s Summer of ’99 tour Friday at Lakeview Amphitheater, the Pizza, Pasta & Wing Festival at the Inner Harbor on Friday and Saturday, and Gemworld 2025 at the State Fairgrounds. Other events feature a Middle Eastern Festival, a Mac N’ Cheese Festival, Fulton Community Market, a City Market by the Everson Museum on Sunday, and family fun such as Penguin Palooza at the zoo, CNY Folksmarch, Alley Cat Bike Ride, and New York Mills’ Party in the Park — all offering live music, food trucks, and local vendors.  CNY Central
  • Anne Anthony is trying to save The Grateful Lepers mosaic, a 12-foot by 7-foot family heirloom created by her aunt in 1982, after a fire damaged the Marina Regina building which is now condemned and set for demolition. City crews ruled the site unsafe for entry and demolition will begin next week — Anthony hopes experts can remove the mosaic from the arcade between the Motherhouse and chapel once proper permissions are granted.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Syracuse Planning Commission approved a second extension for the Angelou Terrace housing project on Monday after Chase Bank requested extra time to match the demolition and new construction timeline + neighborhood commissioner Michael Collins said permits will be issued after financial closing and construction is expected to be complete by March of 2026.  CNY Central

  • Cameron Hairston-Taylor verbally committed to play football at Syracuse on Friday night—he won the 55-meter race at Virginia’s track championships in 6.34 seconds and is known as 'Zoom'.  Syracuse.com
  • Former Syracuse forward Cole Swider shined in an NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas last Thursday as he scored 22 points and knocked down six 3-pointers in an 87 to 85 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick, debuted with 10 points—but Swider’s strong play made him the top performer of the night—adding to his rising profile.  Syracuse.com
  • Freshman center Izoje Uche from Nigeria has joined the Syracuse Orange women's basketball team for the 2025-26 season. Uche, who played in Japan and earned Rookie of the Year honors, will add front-court strength—helping replace key players lost to graduation.  Syracuse.com
  • Calvin Russell III, a five-star wide receiver, verbally committed to play Syracuse football on July 5th and picked the Orange over Michigan, Oregon and Florida State—he credited Fran Brown for his recruiting success.  Syracuse.com
