ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded to a fire at 241 South Collingwood Ave. Saturday night—arriving at 10:08 p.m.—and quickly put out the blaze, rescuing a dog and ensuring that the only occupant escaped as investigators found the fire started from spontaneous combustion in the basement.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • The Syracuse Police Department reported a 30% drop in homicides compared to last year & credited community outreach and strategic policing for the decline. The department also noted a 10% decrease in call volume & explained it was due to electronic reporting and alternative responses to mental health incidents.  CNY Central
  • On Saturday at about 5:30 p.m., Syracuse police responded to a report of a stabbing at the intersection of East Fayette Street and Westmoreland Avenue, finding a 43-year-old man with a stab wound to his thigh who was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is expected to survive—police continue to investigate the incident.  CNY Central

  • The 58th Annual Gemworld event in Syracuse brought together rock collectors and local artists who celebrated minerals and stone art. Lapidary John Sweeney said his love of rocks grew from a childhood hobby into a passion that now guides his teaching—underscoring the event’s mix of art and hands-on discovery.  CNY Central
  • Social Security data showed that Liam was the most popular baby boy name in New York in 2024 (with 1,445 births), making it the top name nationally as well. The statistics mark a steady rise for Liam even though the name first appeared in records in 1954 (when it registered only five times).  Syracuse.com

  • The Syracuse Mets beat the IronPigs 4-0 in a rain-shortened game on Sunday at NBT Bank Stadium — clinching the six-game series. The team will resume play Friday, July 18 when they face the Norfolk Tides in a three-game series.  Syracuse.com
  • Former SU quarterback Tommy DeVito returned to Syracuse on Saturday for the Pizza and Pasta Festival at the Inner Harbor—where he signed autographs and served chicken cutlet sandwiches as part of a VIP package—and said he will fight for his Giants roster spot when training camp begins on July 23.  CNY Central
