ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man died when a car hit him at the intersection of E. Adams and S. Townsend streets near Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse on July 31 at 7:01 a.m.—police said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating.  Syracuse.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Leonard Paradise was taken into custody after he fatally shot a man near Armory Square — a brief traffic dispute escalated when the victim charged him with a butcher knife.  Syracuse.com
  • A man died on July 31 when a dump truck struck him near East Adams and South Townsend streets close to Upstate University Hospital—police said the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • This summer a project let a dozen high schoolers use simple objects and smartphones to create films while learning basic filmmaking skills from local college instructors at Shaffer Art Building — the project is led by faculty including Mišo Suchý and Evan Bode. Their films will debut on February 7 at ArtRage Gallery and run through March 21 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series.  Syracuse University

  • Syracuse Build's Pathways to Apprenticeship program is helping 16 students learn OSHA training, CPR, and MC3 lessons for union trade apprenticeships—this joint effort with the Central and Northern New York Building Trades Council boosts their skill sets for future careers.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Syracuse will soon face $50 fines for speeding in school zones and running red lights as the city installs traffic cameras at 34 school zones and 36 intersections to boost safety. The cameras will be active by Sept. 3 when schools open — a move following Albany’s program that issued over 13,000 tickets in 11 days — with the city receiving 65% of the fines and 35% going to the private technology company installing the system.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse Auditor Alex Marion released a report showing that 25 vacant structure fires in 2024 cost the city over $1 million and stretched fire department resources—he urged the city to adopt an early warning system and stricter inspections to prevent future fires. The report noted that some fires were started by people seeking warmth, which has deepened the housing crisis.  Central Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Central New Yorkers gathered on Wednesday to mark the 60th birthday of Medicare and Medicaid even as many warned that federal cuts could soon leave over 30,000 people without care—cuts that remove $1 trillion from Medicaid and $0.5 billion from Medicare and are projected to cost the state $14 billion. Lawmakers are urged to call a special session this fall to protect coverage for vulnerable residents.  WAER

  • A report from city auditor Alexander Marion found that burned-out vacant houses in Syracuse add to the housing shortage because they are unrepairable and narrow lots do not meet current zoning rules — the auditor calls for code updates and stricter safety measures on vacant properties.  WAER
