  • Gilbane Co. will hold a meeting on Aug. 28th at the downtown Marriott Syracuse for contractors to bid on preconstruction tasks for Micron Technology’s chipmaking complex in Clay—work that will start in November. The firm is seeking local vendors and veteran-owned businesses to help clear trees, haul aggregate, and prepare the site.  Syracuse.com
  • DeWitt is seeing new national-chain business openings this week—The Paper Store opened its Uncharted store over the weekend at Marshall's Plaza and Chik‑Fil‑A will open on Thursday at 6:30 a.m. A Shake Shack restaurant is nearly finished and awaits final landscaping and parking before it opens.  WAER

  • Doris Aleman-Bonilla from Honduras is fighting an immigration charge in federal court in Syracuse as jurors weigh the evidence plus she sobbed when asked if she has two children.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Syracuse Common Council announced that the Veo app will add an AI tool called Virtual Parking Coach to help check if bikes and scooters are parked safely. Users will soon need to take a picture of their ride—if the parking is unsafe, a violation may be issued to their account.  CNY Central
  • Megan Thomas, a lawyer who focuses on sexual harassment cases, said that the Syracuse Airport Authority COO told her to soften the language on her billboard ad—she said it was seen as inflammatory and unprofessional before it was set to promote her firm to women travelers.  Syracuse.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Syracuse football is in a quarterback competition as Rickie Collins Jr. and Steve Angeli vie for the starting role ahead of the season opener on Aug. 30 in Atlanta. Offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon said scrimmages will decide the opening day starter in the coming weeks — the latest Syracuse Sports podcast noted that both quarterbacks are expected to see game time.  Syracuse.com
  • Former Syracuse guard Judah Mintz signed on Tuesday with Turkey's Manisa Basket in the Basketbol Super Ligi after a strong season with the Delaware Blue Coats; he played two seasons at Syracuse and led the Orange in scoring last season with an average of 18.8 points per game.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse Mets announced they will change their name for the 2027 season and invited fans to send ideas through the Re-Name the Team Community Challenge. Submissions are open until Aug. 31—voting on the top 10 will run Sept. 2 to Sept. 12 and on the top 5 from Sept. 14 to Sept. 30, with the new name to be revealed in fall 2026.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse Mets announced they will drop the 'Mets' name in 2027 — fans can submit new name ideas until August 31 and vote through September while the team plays as the Mets in 2026. The change, which keeps the blue and orange colors and mascot, is meant to honor 150 years of baseball in Syracuse.  CNY Central
