  • Christine Makhuli Cotton, a Syracuse native and CEO of PORCH Communities, plans to open a local chapter to fight hunger after raising millions, and she is in talks with local food pantries (the nonprofit already has chapters in 14 states and has raised $15 million in hunger relief).  Syracuse.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tractor trailer crossed the Thruway median on Thursday in Cayuga County and struck a Honda—killing the truck driver and seriously injuring its Syracuse driver while a passenger was later released—traffic backed up for three hours as crews cleared the scene.  Syracuse.com

  • Andrea Abdel opened House of Crepes today at 4506 W. Genesee St., Camillus—her small 800-square-foot shop now serves homemade crepes, Middle Eastern pastries, and smoothies mainly for take-out with help from her son and one other employee.  Syracuse.com

  • Town of Manlius Police Department's undercover plainclothes detail has reduced shoplifting at Fayetteville Town Center by deterring organized groups and recovering over $11,000 in stolen goods— the effort will continue with back-to-school initiatives.  CNY Central

  • Dan Nosewicz now allows the Onondaga Historical Association to add his father Silver’s rare photographs of Nagasaki to its archives—images taken when Silver was an 18-year-old sailor in 1945 that capture the stark devastation of the atomic bomb. The move aims to keep alive the memory of a historic event and remind locals of the lasting impact of nuclear warfare.  Central Current
  • On Saturday, the 5th Annual Queen Street Expo took place at Sankofa Park on the South Side, where Fearless Queens celebrated Black entrepreneurship during National Black Business Month with over 25 local vendors, live music, dance, and interactive workshops—providing a vibrant atmosphere for community engagement. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers should expect lane reductions on Colvin Street in Syracuse starting Monday, August 11 — one lane will serve traffic between Garfield and Moore on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The New York State Department of Transportation said the change will allow utility work for the Interstate 81 Viaduct Project until Tuesday, August 19.  CNY Central
