CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Syracuse police say Marisa M. Connelly, 41, turned herself in Monday and is charged with second-degree manslaughter after she allegedly shoved Lawrence Baker, 68, off a stool at Guilfoil’s Irish Pub on May 31—Baker was found unconscious at the bar and later died in hospital. Syracuse.com
- ➤ Authorities charged Jennifer Quijano and six others in connection with the torture and killing of 24 year old Sam Nordquist while police identified a man who died when he was hit by a dump truck near East Adams and South Townsend streets on Thursday. State DOT said I-690—eastbound in Geddes will be reduced to one lane from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday while the westbound lane will close on weekdays starting this week. Syracuse.com
- ➤ Joshua Emmons pleaded guilty in Onondaga County Court to first-degree manslaughter for beating his 4-year-old son Rykelan Brown to death in May—he had received custody only two months prior—and he will serve a 25-year prison sentence. Syracuse.com

- ➤ Downtown Syracuse's Landmark Theatre will reopen in September after months of careful restoration that returns its original red, gold, and green colors from 1928. The $1.5 million project (financed by a state grant and other donors) will kick off with a 12-day run of Hamilton on Sept 9 (followed by a David Byrne concert on Sept 23). Central Current

- ➤ New York is banning smart phones, smart watches and any device with Internet access in schools today from bell to bell — officials said the rule does not apply to school-issued Chromebooks and school districts submitted enforcement plans by August 1. Syracuse.com

- ➤ The City of Syracuse plans to close a nuisance convenience store in Outer Comstock after officials cited it for illegal cannabis, vape sales and continued tobacco sales despite a revoked license—residents have also complained about illegal parking and litter near local parks and schools. A public hearing is scheduled for August 27. WAER
- ➤ The NYS DOT is moving I-81 construction to Syracuse’s south side and University Hill as the first spans of a 1.4 mile elevated highway will be removed to create a new street-level boulevard. An open house is scheduled for Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Institute of Technology on E. Adams Street where residents can learn about measures to reduce noise and air pollution—officials noted that noise monitors and jackhammer restrictions are in place. WAER
