CRIME NEWS

  • The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office arrested Nicholas St. Andrews and Heather Grems after seizing drugs and multiple guns from 121 Mariposa St. in Syracuse on Aug. 12 — including cocaine, an AK-47 style rifle, and several other firearms.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 2025 New York State Fair—set to run from Aug. 20 to Sept. 1—will offer free concerts with over 40 national acts on two main stages at Suburban Park and Chevy Court, with shows that cater to Millennials, older fans, and kids. Admission costs $8, with free entry for children under 12 and seniors 65 and older, and parking will require an extra fee.  Syracuse.com
  • Rosamond Gifford Zoo will host its annual Asian Elephant Extravaganza on Sunday, August 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will enjoy music, dance and demos such as elephant yoga and painting + the herd’s matriarch Siri celebrates her 58th birthday with a special cake.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NYS DOT held an open house on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central on E. Adams St. to display 40 renderings and explain the I-81 project plans, which include removing viaduct sections in 2027, adding an off-ramp at Colvin Street, and replacing a 10-foot pipe along Almond St.—all under Contract 5 to be finished by mid-2028.  WAER
  • The state transportation department plans to tear down the elevated Interstate 81 and lower city traffic to street level by creating Business Loop 81 — a project that includes a new exit, a roundabout at Van Buren and Almond Streets, and a new railroad bridge.  Syracuse.com

  • The FDA said that Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies sold at Target in a 10-count box from Lot 25195 by Give and Go Prepared Foods Corp in Etobicoke are being recalled in 20 states including New York because they may contain wood pieces—customers should return them for a refund.  Syracuse.com

  • Julian Shay is set to boost scoring for the Tully boys soccer team as practice begins in a few days+ his teammates will work to replace the departed AllCNY stars.  Syracuse.com
  • At Innovative Field in Rochester, the Syracuse Mets defeated the Rochester Red Wings 2-1 on Tuesday night with a 451-foot home run by Jared Young—boosting their score and sealing the win. The victory made them the first International League team to reach 30 wins in the second half and gave them sole possession of first place.  Syracuse.com
  • The Syracuse football team is working to fix its tackling weakness from last season by increasing practice sessions as it prepares for its game against Tennessee in September—head coach Fran Brown said the team is focused on improving defense.  Syracuse.com
