COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Syracuse Police are using the Koper Curve initiative—where officers walk for 10 to 20 minutes each shift in areas with high crime—to build trust with neighbors and business owners. The program has recorded over 100 weekly foot patrols and will continue through winter despite the weather.  CNY Central

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Now and Later — a popular bar on East Washington Street — will close its doors for the final time on August 30 due to financial constraints and a changing bar industry.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday at the New York State Fair, 88,060 visitors attended despite high temperatures, marking the busiest day so far. Kidz Bop Live entertained fans in the afternoon while O.A.R. drew 25,000 at Suburban Park—evidence that the fair continues to draw large crowds.  Syracuse.com
  • On August 24, 60,028 people visited the Great New York State Fair in Geddes, and a severe thunderstorm caused a two-hour admission pause—after the storm passed, about 16,000 people attended the Busta Rhymes concert at Suburban Park.  CNY Central
  • The Everson Museum of Art and Flower Skate Shop held a celebratory sendoff for the DEAD END exhibit on Sunday — visitors brought their own boards to join open skate sessions, competitions and a half-pipe demo inside the museum galleries, and the exhibit exploring skate culture remains on view through August 31.  CNY Central

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Micron posted record sales as it rides the AI boom and is set to break ground on a new chipmaking complex in Central NY—its stock price soared by more than 40% this year while it made high bandwidth chips for Nvidia last year.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York legislators approved a bill that reforms state contracts to help nonprofits get a 25% payment advance and interest on late reimbursements—Gov. Hochul will review the legislation and has not signed it yet. Nonprofit leaders said the changes are vital as delayed funds force many organizations to take costly credit—some nonprofits may face gaps that endanger their services.  Central Current
  • The New York State Department of Transportation is reducing a lane on East Colvin Street between Garfield Avenue and Moore Avenue today as a flagger alternates traffic from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. This work, part of the I-81 Viaduct Project, may change with weather—ending Tuesday, August 26.  CNY Central

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • At the 2025 State Fair, Empire Pub has introduced drink buckets called Drinky McBuckets and the Thirsty 34—offering fairgoers a fun way to mix and match beers, seltzers, and cocktails near the Suburban Park concert stage. The new option gives customers a discount when ordering by the bucket and sets a lively tone for the fair.  Syracuse.com
