CRIME NEWS

  • Rahim Williams, 37, was sentenced to seven years in prison for pleading guilty to first-degree assault for his role in the April 2023 kidnapping and beating of Koddie Beechner in Syracuse—prosecutors noted his lesser involvement but ruled that his part in the brutal crime warranted the sentence.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Great New York State Fair in Geddes on Monday, August 25, the event featured Maple Day with maple foods and a 24-foot trailer of educational exhibits, free admission for law enforcement on Law Enforcement Day, and free entry for pass holders on State Parks Day. A ceremony to honor fallen heroes took place at 11:15 a.m.—followed by a parade at 6 p.m. and concerts at Chevy Court and Suburban Park featuring 98 Degrees.  CNY Central
  • The Cousineau family, who scattered their late father's ashes on the historic Moody Mile, gathered Saturday and now seeks to have an outdoor memorial built at the state fair grounds—hoping to honor a cherished part of local auto racing history. State fair staff said they are open to discussions if a proposal is presented.  Central Current

FINANCE NEWS

  • Data from the New York State Comptroller shows that New Haven in Oswego County had the highest full value property tax rate in Central New York in 2024 at $9.53 per $1,000 of full taxable value—while three towns in Onondaga County ranked in the top 10 with rates of $7.43 in Geddes, $7.34 in Tully and $6.93 in Camillus.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Sept. 3, new speed and red-light cameras will be active in Syracuse school zones near schools like Dr. Weeks Elementary, with drivers receiving warnings until Nov. 2 — then $50 fines will be issued if they exceed the 10 mph reduced limit. Officials say the cameras issue civil tickets that do not add points and warn drivers to pay or dispute within 40 days to avoid extra penalties.  Syracuse.com
  • The historic Westminster Park staircase near Syracuse University has been closed since late 2023 due to safety hazards — its repair cost has nearly tripled from an estimated $1.2M to $3M today and city council will decide if the project is funded.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • A settlement reached with Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing promises increased oversight after the family of home health aide Anne Frances Hamilton said her care was lacking following her emergency brain surgery in November 2019 at Upstate Medical—NY's attorney general explained she will not file criminal charges.  Syracuse.com
