COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Latoya Jones, a Syracuse advocate, has launched Caps and Mocktails to offer caregivers a chance to relax and share support—her Joe Family Foundation works to ease mental stress for families in Central New York. The event provides a space for caregivers to network and gain important mental health support.  CNY Central
  • Onondaga County Public Libraries are reaching out to the Syracuse community by joining local farmers markets and sports events at NBT Bank Stadium to sign up new library card holders and offer storytimes for children. The libraries will also host clothing drives and a costume closet in October — plans that go along with a school library card initiative in September — as part of their expanding outreach programs.  CNY Central
  • Harvey's Garden was crowded with Syracuse fans on game day who enjoyed a fun atmosphere and a great selection of drinks. The pet-friendly venue supported local vendors—boosting community ties and local business.  CNY Central

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new app called Too Good To Go now lets Syracuse diners order surprise bags of leftover meals from local restaurants like Purple Banana for about $6 — a price that reflects a bag’s approximate $18 food value — as its vice president Chris MacAulay said. Customers must download the app to reserve a bag and pick it up during a designated time window.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse’s Mr. Shop—an Armory Square menswear store owned by the Shapiro family—crafted ten custom suits for NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson, a Syracuse University alumnus, who will wear them when the season begins on September 7th; the suits include embroidered slogans that capture his style.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, police shut down Destiny Mall after receiving reports of a man carrying what looked like an assault rifle—later found to be an umbrella with a Samurai style handle.  WAER
  • Syracuse police responded to a shooting on the 200 block of Rowland Street after their ShotSpotter system detected multiple gunshots early Saturday morning at 2:34 a.m.—a 19-year-old woman was taken to University Hospital with a gunshot wound to her leg and is in stable condition.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • All Time Low performed at Suburban Park on August 30th as part of the state fair, playing pop-punk hits that echoed the mid-2000s vibe. Over 18,000 fans watched the band and more than 100,000 visitors attended the fair by its eleventh day—highlighting the event's nostalgic appeal.  CNY Central

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Aug. 30, Syracuse lost 45 to 26 to No. 24 Tennessee in Atlanta as quarterback Steve Angeli passed for 247 yards and Yasin Willis scored three rushing touchdowns. Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar threw for three touchdowns including a 73 yard pass—officials noted—while Syracuse prepares to host UConn on Sept. 6.  CNY Central
