CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg in Syracuse’s Near West Side at about 2:34 a.m. Saturday following multiple gunshots detected by ShotSpotter—she was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is now in stable condition.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse police placed Destiny USA mall on lockdown after 911 callers mistook an umbrella — designed to look like a samurai sword — for a gun.  CNY Central
  • On August 31, a Pennsylvania man named Branden J. Brown attacked a coworker with a knife at Santillo’s Sausage during the New York State Fair in Syracuse—he fled but was later arrested after police recovered his weapon and the injured worker was taken to Upstate Hospital.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • Day 11 of the New York State Fair on Aug. 30 in Geddes recorded 100,396 visitors—over 50,000 more than on the same day last year. So far, 742,870 people have attended this annual event—visitors enjoyed rides, concerts, and food.  Syracuse.com
  • Shaggy performed a lively reggae party at Suburban Stage on Sunday night and officials estimated that 48,000 people saw his concert at the New York State Fair—making it the third largest performance in Fair history.  Syracuse.com

  • Dave Shullick Jr. earned pole position during Friday’s qualifying at Oswego Speedway for Sunday's Budweiser Classic by posting a lap of 15.955 seconds — earning a $1,000 bonus. Other racers competed in supermodified, small-block supers and stock car events as they prepared for Sunday's final rounds.  Syracuse.com
  • Ron Silk won his 29th Whelen Modified Tour race at Oswego Speedway on Saturday night — he passed Austin Beers on the 123rd lap to secure a $12,000 prize check.  Syracuse.com
