COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The PEACE Luncheon returned—its first since COVID-19—on Sept. 3 at Dobson Fellowship Hall in Skaneatles, where seniors received healthy meals and a chance to connect with others. Onondaga County Legislator Julie Abbott said the community played a key role in reviving the program.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • A Syracuse man was sentenced to 27 years to life for fatally stabbing a homeless woman 38 times outside a vacant home—he returned to the scene after the attack to dispose of evidence.  Syracuse.com
  • Anthony Price, 56, was indicted on second-degree murder and other charges after police said he fatally shot his girlfriend Nicole Azzoto, 40, with a loaded shotgun on July 17 at a Syracuse home — he moved her body and hid evidence in a dumpster.  Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Syracuse University partnered with the Syracuse City School District for the 5th summer internship program that gave high school students from five local schools hands-on paid work on campus and built essential skills — many participants earned their diplomas and later chose to continue their studies at the University.  Syracuse University
  • Today, Central New York’s first regional STEAM school opened its doors to its first class of freshmen since 1975 + students began choosing mascots and colors to shape the school’s identity. The school drew 202 students from the city and 48 from surrounding areas + industry partners will develop the curriculum to prepare students for future careers.  CNY Central
  • Syracuse University Libraries’ LaunchPad is hosting fall 2025 competitions for student entrepreneurs with Ideas Fest on Sept. 12, 'Cuse Tank on Sept. 26, a Startup Showcase on Oct. 17, a Halloween Freelance Small Business Competition on Oct. 31, and Impact Prize on Nov. 19 — participants must sign up for LaunchPad emails and submit online applications by the given deadlines. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 26, Great Lakes Cheese discharged wastewater into Ischua Creek in Franklinville, causing tens of thousands of fish and other aquatic species to die—state DEC required the company to change its monitoring and improve its digester operations, and the public is advised to avoid using the creek until further notice.  Syracuse.com

  • Pizza Cutters, a Syracuse pizzeria, won two first-place trophies at the 24th annual National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo for their unique tempura and sweet wings—owner Sal Mere said the wins and a new partnership with Dan-O’s Seasoning are set to boost the shop’s profile.  Syracuse.com
