COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Syracuse received $1.7 million from the state to renovate and reopen the vacant Valley Plaza Grocery Store on Southside— the project will bring fresh and prepared foods and grocery delivery for seniors.  WAER

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire damaged a vacant 2 1/2-story house on Syracuse’s South Side on Sunday night when firefighters reached 204 Lincoln Ave. at 9:14 p.m.—they quickly put out flames in the rear stairwell and found minor smoke and water damage while investigators work to determine the cause.  Syracuse.com
  • On Monday, Syracuse firefighters responded to a house fire on Park Street (in the 1100 block) and extinguished it in about 15 minutes with no injuries or occupants (investigators are examining the cause).  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • Syracuse police responded to a June 17 911 call reporting that Nicole Azzoto was threatened with a gun at her Glass Terrace home—three weeks before she was fatally shot during a domestic violence attack by her boyfriend, Anthony Price, who had a history of violent offenses.  Syracuse.com

  • Today in Syracuse, the Landmark Theatre presents Hamilton after major renovations while the week offers a busy lineup of events such as free Rock & Roll Bingo at Bullfinch Brewpub on Monday, Festa Italiana downtown on Friday, and live music at BareRoots Music Festival at Thornden Park on Saturday—each event showcasing local culture with food, music, and community fun.   Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Syracuse Abroad Week will run from Sept. 15 to Sept. 19 and invite students to join virtual sessions that explain study abroad options, financing, and internships. On Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a fair on the Quad—global ambassadors and program advisors will answer questions about international study opportunities.  Syracuse University
  • Mayoral candidates in Syracuse shared their plans to support new school superintendent Pamela Odom, who will take charge in November when voters select the next mayor—responses were posted online to guide efforts in improving education amid local growth. The candidates detailed ideas that may soon shape how the city’s schools work to boost student outcomes.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County lawmakers approved borrowing over $60 million to repair the aging sewer system, including fixing the Ley Creek Force Main that carries sewage from Liverpool to the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment plant near Destiny USA—officials also plan to use a $10 million grant and expand capacity in Clay for a future Micron chip fab.  WAER
  • Fulton Mayor James Rice urged federal, state and local officials to help bring home workers detained in an ICE raid at Nutrition Bar Confections in Cato on September 4—saying the raid ignored Constitutional rights and hurt local families. He asked community members to contact leaders so that a swift response can protect those affected.  CNY Central

  • Justy Carruthers ’25 moved from San Diego to Syracuse to study sport management and quickly became the youngest director of on-campus recruiting; coach Fran Brown said her work helped the team sign top recruits—like record-setting quarterback Kyle McCord.
