COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Census Bureau data from 2024 showed that four Upstate New York cities—Syracuse, Rochester, Albany and Buffalo—ranked among the top 100 in the nation for child poverty; two of these cities were in the top 25 among places with over 65,000 people. This data highlights ongoing social challenges in the region.  Syracuse.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Mark Schmidt, owner of Nutrition Bar Confectioners in Cato, said he, his family and workers were shocked when ICE raided his business on Sept. 4 and detained 57 employees, and Governor Hochul visited the plant to ask questions as he works to rebuild his workforce.  CNY Central

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert arrives in Syracuse on Friday, September 26 at The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater with a live orchestra playing the Nickelodeon series' acclaimed soundtrack + the concert celebrates the 20th anniversary and will start at 7:30 p.m.  CNY Central
  • The Syracuse University Art Museum announced Charlotte Bingham ’27 as the 2025-26 Luise and Morton Kaish Fellow—she will work with museum staff on research, exhibitions and public programs.  Syracuse University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sony Electronics partners with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications to bring modern equipment, hands-on training and industry advice to help students prepare for media and visual arts careers. Today marks Sony Signature Innovation Day at Newhouse—workshops, demonstrations and discussions will give students direct access to Sony’s latest imaging and broadcast tools.  Syracuse University
  • The Couri Hatchery and Zachary K. Pecenak, Ph.D. have launched a VC in Residence program for students that starts Tuesday, Oct. 1 when he will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—he will return each month at Bird Library or the Hatchery to advise on venture capital strategies.  Syracuse University
  • SUNY ESF faces a $6 million budget gap because its lab classes cost more to run than traditional courses—ESF president Joanie Mahoney said the school needs legislative approval for tuition hikes while union leader Matthew Smith warned that rising staffing costs may force cuts that could hurt program quality. Students and alumni are also asking for stronger funding to keep the college on track.  WAER

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sarah Walton, the former director of East Adams neighborhood development, has been named interim executive director of Blueprint 15—she started her new role today to lead efforts in redeveloping public housing alongside the Syracuse Housing Authority and plans to set strategic priorities for the next year.  Central Current
  • The Clay Town Board will hold a public hearing on October 6 at 7:35 p.m. at Clay Town Hall — a meeting to gather public comments on a zoning change for about 21 acres at White Pine Commerce Park so the Micron chip plant project can move forward.  WAER
  • City officials said the I-81 Viaduct Project is underway in Syracuse as drivers see a new bridge structure emerging quickly—while residents offer mixed responses with some praising the fast progress and others upset by heavy traffic and limited updates. The removal of parts of the old structure will proceed on schedule with demolition planned for 2027.  CNY Central

HEALTH NEWS

  • Syracuse must improve how it tests and reports drinking water lead levels after an EPA order was issued last week following a spring inspection triggered by elevated test results from 2024; the city can avoid a $50,000 penalty by following the new procedures.  Syracuse.com
