COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Enable: The Disability Podcast is a new weekly show on YouTube and major podcast platforms where Kelsey Oates, founder of the inclusive social media app Self-Advocacy Wins, and product advisor Kamisha Heriveaux discuss social media challenges for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities—addressing issues of digital inclusion. The hosts will also co-host a panel on hiring tips and accessibility options at the Community at Work Job Fair on Oct. 16 at CNY Works.  Syracuse.com
  • Deka Eysaman has been hired as the first executive director of the South Side Community Growth Foundation — a group funded by Chedy Hampson to boost affordable housing and local projects for Syracuse’s South Side. She previously worked at the New York Civil Liberties Union and led the Urban Jobs Task Force, a role that will help strengthen community support in the area.  Syracuse.com

  • Joey’s Italian Restaurant has opened a new $5M building across from the original site while keeping long-standing traditions and familiar staff. The 6,500‑square‑foot space features a larger kitchen, bigger bar, and media room—supporting Syracuse’s game-day scene and local growth.  CNY Central

CULTURE NEWS

  • Work began on the three-story mural of legendary Coach Jim Boeheim in Armory Square on Sept. 21 at 215 West Fayette St.; Philadelphia—based artist Chris B. Murray leads the project and has launched a GoFundMe asking for $75,000 as he expects the mural to finish in about three weeks.  CNY Central

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight SU students and alumni were selected for Fulbright awards yesterday— the program sends recipients abroad to study, teach, or research in over 140 countries.  The Daily Orange
  • Oren Lyons, 95, turned over a lifetime of letters, documents and photos to Syracuse University’s Special Collections today—items that skilled archivists will soon catalog while remaining under the stewardship of his family and the Onondaga Nation. Scholars will have access to the collection that captures Lyons’ influential role as a respected Haudenosaunee diplomat.  Central Current
  • Syracuse University today announced Dan Dillon as senior vice president for business development — a role effective Oct. 20 — to lead efforts expanding the University’s online and post-traditional education offerings while reporting directly to Chancellor Kent Syverud. Dillon brings over three decades of experience from roles at the University of South Carolina, University of Florida, and Arizona State University.  Syracuse University
  • Doctoral students Maheswar Chaudhary and Ashok Thapa in Professor Shalabh Maroo’s lab invented a durable superhydrophobic coating from candle soot—this surface repels water and sticky substances and withstands high heat, fast water jets, and chemical baths.  Syracuse University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Between January and March, Syracuse killed 137 deer as part of its tick and deer management plan—recording the second highest total since 2019—while processing the meat for donations to the Food Bank of Central NY. The city will update Common Council and invite public comments at 11 a.m. on Sept. 29 at City Hall to discuss current results and plans for the 2025-26 program.  Syracuse.com
  • City leaders will share last year's deer removal results and preview upcoming efforts at a Monday meeting starting at 11 a.m. in council chambers at city hall—inviting residents to submit monthly deer reports to help manage overpopulation and reduce risks of Lyme disease, accidents, and property damage.  WAER

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In August, home prices in Central New York rose 8.2% to over $270,000 while listings jumped by 43% and sales fell nearly 13%—real estate agents remain hopeful that September will bring more buyer interest as mortgage rates drop ahead of a planned rate cut.  WAER

  • Nine-year-old Donato Patti from Camillus hit a hole in one at Burnett Park on Sept. 13 — his first real swing after club pro Michael Morschauser corrected his grip. The shot is one many golfers only dream of.  Syracuse.com
  • Section-III high school football saw many close games this week—Jamesville-Dewitt won 27 to 26 over Weedsport with key runs while Marcellus, Whitesboro and Liverpool won by large margins to start the season strong.  CNY Central
