- ➤ The Spooktacular Stroll will return to Long Branch Park from Oct. 9 to Oct. 26 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and feature a half-mile walk through nine Halloween-themed sections—Spider Forest, Skeleton Graveyard, Dinosaur Dungeon, and Ghost Barnyard—as well as family activities like a scavenger hunt and themed days such as Dog-o-Ween and Family Night. Admission costs $25 per car and proceeds from dog events will benefit local shelters. CNY Central
- ➤ At the first Repair Cafe CNY event at the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship at LeMoyne College, a mother and her twin daughters got their broken items fixed by volunteers who mended a toy’s music box and a pair of ripped sandals. Morgan Ingraham at Syracuse University’s Institute for Sustainability Engagement started the free repair events in May to promote sustainability in the community — the next event will be held at Liverpool Public Library on Nov. 8. - ➤ Brenda Mims — a dedicated operations supervisor at the Samaritan Center at 215 S. State St. — worked for 27 years serving hundreds of local residents by preparing meals for those in need, including a meal prep on September 11 that featured barbecue chicken sandwiches, tomato cucumber salad and sweet potatoes. - ➤ Onondaga Community College partnered with Micron to launch a 3,000 square-foot clean room simulator today to train students in semiconductor work—this project got a $5 million gift from Micron that county and state matched, and students will also use equipment from labs worldwide. CNY Central

- ➤ On Sept. 30th, over 50 National Grid volunteers enhanced greenspace at the Museum of Science and Technology by replanting redbud and red maple trees and installing a garden to attract pollinator species—efforts that supported the urban environment. CNY Central
- ➤ Members of the Haudenosaunee community and climate activists gathered outside the Marriott Hotel on September 30 to protest Governor Hochul’s nuclear energy summit—protesters said the project could divert funds from wind and solar investments. CNY Central
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Congress faces a deadline on Oct. 1 to pass a short-term budget extension—if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement, nearly 3 million federal employees, including 116,000 in New York, will be furloughed. - ➤ The City of Rome planning board will provide an informational update on October 7 regarding a proposed Chobani yogurt plant at Griffiss Business and Technology Park. - ➤ Legendary Syracuse University basketball player Lawrence Moten (53) passed away; he led the team from 1991 to 1995 with more than 19 points per game and is remembered as both a top scorer and a kind man.
