COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At 7 a.m. today, demolition crews tore down the old Joey’s Italian Restaurant building at Carrier Circle as former owner Joey DeCuffa and current owner Bill Cleary watched the removal of its familiar iron gates used by thousands over 43 years. By mid-morning, debris was cleared for additional parking to serve the new Joey’s that opened last week—marking the end of an era.  Syracuse.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • This week Central New York offers a wide range of events as residents join a free canal boat tour in Brewerton on Monday and a collage buffet plus Feng E’s live performance in Oswego today—events continue with RetroGameCon in Syracuse on Friday and festivals like the LaFayette Apple Festival over the weekend. Organizers have scheduled activities covering art, history, food and culture with set dates, prices and times so locals can choose the events that interest them.  Syracuse.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Transportation will plant over 30 species of trees along Syracuse’s community grid after the viaduct project completes in 2028 to help cut air and noise pollution—most of these trees are native. The city will care for the trees and experts say that as they grow, they will better block noise and soak up pollutants.  Central Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jeremiah Thompson is running for a seat on the Onondaga County Legislature in the 4th district that covers Liverpool, Salina, Geddes and Solvay. The actor and writing teacher said his work in the arts helps him connect with locals and he will face the election on November 4—early voting will start on October 25.  Syracuse.com
  • Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley sued the county—seeking $116,379.15 to cover legal fees from lawsuits over a planned Jamesville prison closure and disputes over top administrator hires. The county rejected a bill from one lawsuit because Shelley appealed the lost case.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Oswego Health will expand its emergency room in Syracuse’s biggest suburbs to include space for children in mental crisis — a move aimed at tackling fiscal pressures and increasing access for more than 125,000 potential new patients. The system plans to offer easier bookings for routine scans and primary care to boost its network.  Syracuse.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Super DIRT Week, once held at the Syracuse Mile, is now in its 53rd edition at Oswego Speedway as over 300 modified stock cars compete in four classes for more than $450,000 in prize money. The week features block parties, autograph sessions and a Saturday 200-lap finale with a $53,000 prize—events that give fans one final major dirt racing show before winter.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse football coach Fran Brown must decide if he will replace veteran Rickie Collins with freshman Luke Carney—expert Chris Carlson warns the move could be irreversible.  Syracuse.com

  • At Auburn High School, sophomore Connor Dautrich helped his boys’ lacrosse team win a game on May 8 with two goals and two assists—he now plans to work on his strength during the offseason and take on a bigger role next season.  The Daily Orange
  • Syracuse football has had a mixed season with a record of 3 to 3 and the loss of quarterback Steve Angeli to an Achilles tear — defensive struggles and turnovers hurt the team's performance. The team will play Pitt on Oct 18 and UNC on Oct 31 to test their bowl eligibility while players like Villari and Cook show promise.  The Daily Orange
