ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen were in a car accident Monday night in the Hamptons when their SUV crashed into a tree after swerving to avoid a garbage truck—both remain unharmed as they said on Instagram they were in town for the film festival and noted that Alec felt regret after damaging his wife Hilaria’s car while the Baldwin family maintains longstanding Syracuse ties.  CNY Central

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Developer Rick Destito purchased the shut-in City Hardware building on Oct. 2 for $480,000—he said he will either convert its second floor into live-work space for artists or lease the first floor to a tenant who can reopen the long-time hardware store. He also plans to convert the rear warehouse into additional parking to support his expanding Gear Factory, which houses artist studios.  Syracuse.com

FINANCE NEWS

  • Starting Monday, unemployment benefits for Central New Yorkers will rise from $504 per week to $869 as the state clears its trust fund debt—researcher Ian Greer from Cornell said the change will help cover essential costs and align benefits with the region's higher living expenses after six years of frozen rates.  WAER

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Oct. 13, government offices closed for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day while banks, grocery stores, and major retailers kept normal hours—post offices did not deliver mail and Syracuse parking meters were free.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC data showed that heart disease was New York’s leading cause of death in 2023, causing over 41,000 deaths — a rate of 152.8 per 100,000 people — while cancer caused over 32,000 deaths and had a rate of 120.6.  Syracuse.com
  • The Call in for Cancer event will be held on October 16 at the Upstate Cancer Center, where donors can call 315-464-500 or text CALLIN to 41444 to support cancer patients. CNY Central will report live—sharing stories of how donations help people undergoing treatment.  CNY Central
  • Metro Pilates Studio on South Salina Street will host 'Teasers for Tata's Pilates fundraiser workshop' on Saturday, October 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. for $80—this fee covers a Pilates session and a shirt while a prize basket drawing is held—with proceeds benefiting Maureen's Hope Foundation to aid locals battling breast cancer.  CNY Central

  • A new law now treats crossbows like vertical bows in New York and has sparked mixed reactions among bowhunters—local archery shops report a surge in orders as hunters rush to certify while traditional enthusiasts worry that easy-to-use crossbows may weaken long-practiced skills.
