  • On May 5, Mayor Ben Walsh turned on the restored Franklin Square fountain after months of repair in Alexander City—joined by Commissioner of Parks & Recreation Syeisha Byrd and community volunteers. The fountain is now available for photos and reservations until October 31.  CNY Central

  • The Small Business Administration for the Upstate New York District honored several local small business owners during an awards ceremony held Monday at Onondaga Community College – winners included Shawni Davis of Luminary Electrical, Dr. Kate Robinson of Lyndon Pediatrics, Matthew Peirson of Simple Roast Coffee Company, Mark and Alex Williams of Savurn Memorials, with NBT Bank and Syracuse Boat Tours also recognized during National Small Business Week.  CNY Central

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NYSDOT said I-81 northbound will be reduced to one lane from Exit 27/28 to Exit 98 daily from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. from May 6 to May 9 near Hancock International Airport—drivers should expect delays due to heavy traffic.  CNY Central
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers reached a budget deal that will allocate $450 million for a new emergency department and annex at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse — a project aimed at relieving overcrowding for a 14-county region. The funding will appear in budget bills released later today.  Syracuse.com
  • The state budget today set aside more than $100 million for Onondaga County Water Authority to begin its largest water expansion since the 1960s — building a 26-mile pipeline to Lake Ontario to double daily water capacity from 36 million to 72 million gallons to support Micron Technology's chip project and related growth — with Micron planning to break ground in November.  Syracuse.com
  • Syracuse Police Department launched a new safety program—View Forty-Four—that provides property owners free Ring Doorbell cameras plus a year of video and alert subscriptions. The pilot program was announced on May 6 at Home HeadQuarters on Erie Boulevard West and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis with support from the Allyn Family Foundation.  CNY Central

  • Syracuse University men’s lacrosse had four players drafted in the 2025 Premier Lacrosse League draft on Tuesday, March 18 — Sam English was picked third overall by California Redwoods, senior attack Owen Hiltz was selected eighth overall by Carolina Chaos, Michael Grace was chosen by New York Atlas, and Carter Rice was picked by California.  Syracuse.com
