CULTURE NEWS

  • The Landmark Theater began the next phase of its $1.5 million interior renovations to restore its 97-year-old auditorium to its original 1928 look. The project includes restoring the proscenium arch, balcony walls and rail, and the ceiling up to the balcony landing — work that will be completed before its Centennial Celebrations in 2028.  CNY Central

  • Christopher Tuff was named CEO of Centro after a unanimous board vote on May 30—he served as deputy CEO for over four years and has even driven buses during special events. The agency said it chose him after a nearly 18-month nationwide search and set his new salary at $230,000 as it continues to provide over 7 million rides a year.  Syracuse.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tom Golisano donated $10 million on June 4 to bring his total gift to $20 million, boosting care for children and mental health programs in Syracuse—Upstate Medical raised over $7 million through its Foundation to expand services at four local facilities that now bear his name—while adding new services such as an inpatient unit for children with autism and severe behaviors.  WAER

  • The final syracuse.com poll for Section III girls lacrosse placed Cicero-North Syracuse at No. 1 after a narrow win over West Genesee in the Class A final—South Jefferson stayed at No. 2 after defending their sectional title, and Jamesville-DeWitt earned the third spot. This ranking marks the season's end and highlights the strong performances of these top teams.  Syracuse.com
  • Jamesville-DeWitt beat Homer 20-5 on June 5th, 2024 at SUNY Cortland—recording its third straight Section III Class C title and a 10-game win streak before advancing to the regional round at Cicero-North Syracuse.  Syracuse.com
  • Marcellus boys lacrosse defeated Skaneateles 11—10 in double overtime on June 4 at East Syracuse Minoa High School to win the Section III Class D championship. Jimmy Cox scored the game-winning goal seven seconds into the second overtime, and the team will face the winner of the subregional game on Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse.  Syracuse.com
