ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A box truck struck the underside of the Parkway Bridge in Salina at 1:30 p.m. Friday — all lanes from Oswego Street to Park Street were closed while the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office responded.  CNY Central

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Marcy Corrections Officer Michael Mashaw is set to stand trial Oct. 6 for manslaughter—bodycam video shows him involved in the violent beating of inmate Robert Brooks, who died at 43 after his transfer from Mohawk to Marcy.  CNY Central

ECONOMY NEWS

  • KeyBank CEO Chris Gorman said the area will see rapid growth when Micron Technology begins building its $100 billion chip plant in Clay this fall—creating 9,000 high-paying jobs and attracting 40,000 supply chain workers. The expansion is expected to boost local spending and spark a surge in demand for both multifamily and single-family housing—fostering long-term economic activity.  Syracuse.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Syracuse University is replacing its Diversity and Inclusion Office with a People and Culture unit as it prepares for the fall semester. Chancellor Kent Syverud said the change will support faculty and staff — a move designed to ease pressure from new federal policies.  WAER
  • Today, Oneida School District announced that its 500 high school students and staff will move to Bishop Grimes Jr/Sr High School for the upcoming school year—further details regarding the transition will be released later.  Syracuse.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Onondaga County voters will decide this fall on a proposal to extend legislative terms from two to four years and limit service to three consecutive terms—set to take effect after the 2026 election. The proposal, the first of its kind in about 40 years, has bipartisan support from local lawmakers.  WAER

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Syracuse VA Medical Center finished a year-long renovation of its Community Living Center on August 1 — the upgrade includes 28 rooms with a new common area for family visits, an enhanced indoor/outdoor patio, a new dayroom and dining area, an improved nursing station, and a dedicated staff room.  CNY Central

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nine-year-old Srihari Mohan earned four medals at the 2025 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Fayetteville—two gold in Kubudo, a silver in team kumite, and a bronze in open kumite, making him the first Central New York student to win gold at the event. He said he practiced hard for many weeks to reach this achievement.  CNY Central
